Amber is a stone made from fossilized tree sap. Amber may contain small creatures that became trapped by the sap as it oozed out and were fossilized along with it, often being preserved in near-perfect condition.

History[]

Bubo, the Great Tree's blacksmith, calls amber "Fool's iron". This is because, when charged with enough static electricity, metal such as flecks are drawn magnetically to the amber just as they would to iron. An example of this happens in The Shattering, where Primrose trades a few turquoise chips for an amber bead necklace from Trader Mags. This amber bead is meant to be a "good luck charm". Shortly after, she is kidnapped by the Pure Ones. In the hollow where she is kept she is forced to sleep on a nest of moss, which she soon discovers to be filled with flecks in an effort to shatter her. She rubs the amber for good luck, unknowingly creating static. After she drops the necklace onto her chest, flecks jump out from the nest and stick magnetically to the bead. Realizing what happened, she repeats this until she had removed all flecks from the nest.
