"When the Pure Ones invaded our kingdom, I fought back. They thought they could use that, so, they took my family, and they promised me if I followed orders no harm'd come to them. And I've been doing their dirty work ever since." - Grimble about his family's fate

Bess, Grimble's daughter, is not named in the movie, but many fans speculate that Grimble's daughter in the film was intended to be Bess.

History[]

Battle of the Ice Claws[]

A crying mother owl is seen sheltering her owlet. In the final film, two similarly looking owls are described as being Grimble's family.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole[]

Bess and her mother, Grimble's mate, appear in a flashback as Grimble tells Soren and Gylfie about his past. They are shown being taken away from Grimble by the Pure Ones, Bess screaming. When Grimble teaches Soren and Gylfie to fly, telling them how to get to the Great Tree, he says he would like to come with them, but that he "still hold out the hope of freeing my family".

Later in the movie, when Eglantine is brought to the Great Tree, there is an owlet that says "Mommy?". The owlet and the mother look identical to the owls Grimble referred to as his family. This is likely the animators reusing character models, but it could also suggest that Bess and her mother managed to escape the Pure Ones and find their way to the Great Tree.

Species/Appearances[]

Like in the books, Grimble is a Boreal Owl; however, during the line "they took my family", Grimble's daughter appears to be a juvenile Boreal Owl while her mother appears to be a Spotted Owl. During the deleted Battle of the Ice Claws scene, the owlet rumoured to be Bess appears to be a Spotted Owl, her mother a Spotted Owl as well. The owlet and mother seen later at the Great Tree are also both Spotted Owls.

This may be due to various reasons:

  • The directors figured the average viewer wouldn't be able to tell Spotted Owls from Boreal Owls;
  • The owls in the deleted scene and at the tree are not related to Grimble;
  • The scene where Grimble's family is taken away may have originally been intended to be shown in a different context.
