Blue Owls
Names
Common Name: Blue Owls
Scientific Name: Strigiforms
Appearance
The owls are recognizable species - Long-eared Owls, Pygmy Owls, etc - but their colouration is made up of different shades of blue, like the Kielian snakes. The shades very from owl to owl, some owls being turquoise and others having more cobalt feathers.
Behavior
Blue owls generally display the same behaviors as other owls, hunting, finding hollows and mates, and raising offspring. Opposed to the owls of the Northern and Southern Kingdoms, they are far more peaceful, and slightly more advanced in the area of architecture.

In the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series, all of the known owl inhabitants of the Middle Kingdom have blue feathers. They are introduced in The River of Wind.

Culture[]

The culture of the blue owls appears to be influenced by Hinduism and Chinese beliefs. The concept of phonqua bares similarities to karma, while the concept of zi is comparable to qi.

They speak a language called Jouzhen, which is distinct from both Hoolian and Krakish. Blue owls are noted to have a "halting" accent when speaking Hoolian.

The blue owls are capable of basic architecture, being known to construct platforms in their home trees, with each platform serving a different purpose. One such purpose is simply as a place to enjoy tea, which many owls of the Middle Kingdom brew and drink.

Wild yaks are of cultural significance to the owls of the Middle Kingdom, as they use their milk to create yak butter. This butter is then used for a variety of purposes, but mainly to fuel fires. It can also be consumed.

Species Population[]

In The River of Wind, Striga mentions that he has never seen a "black-eyed owl" and that he has never seen a Barn Owl.[1] This would suggest that owl species like Spotted Owls or Barred Owls, which normally have very dark eyes, would have different color eyes, likely yellow because of their relation to hagsfiends. This also suggests that there are no Tyto owls in the Middle Kingdoms.

Mentioned species in the Middle Kingdom include Snowy, Burrowing, Boreal, Spotted, Pygmy, Great Gray, and Long-Eared Owls.

  1. The River of Wind chapter 10 includes, "But, he thought, I have never seen a black-eyed owl," as narration of The Striga's thoughts. Around Page 50 on some editions probably.
