Braithe's Mother was an unnamed female Whiskered Screech Owl, or Megascops trichopsis, and the mother of Braithe, who she mothered with Bo before his life as a slipgizzle. She perished two summers before her son's discovery regarding his heritage after succumbing to a case of gray scale.
Through her wingfast to Bo, she was the daughter-in-law of Lillium and the legendary Ezylryb, the niece-via-marriage of Edvard, Ifghar and Lysa, the granddaughter-in-law to Raskin and Ulfa and the grandniece-through-marriage of Hanja. Her son's own union also made her the mother-in-law of Fiona.

Before the Books[]
At an unknown point in time prior to the death of Kludd and fall of the Pure Ones, Braithe's Mother met and fell in love with Bo, who returned her feelings and eventually became her mate, the pair settling in the forests of Ambala. The pair were happily married and loved each other deeply, Bo referring to his mate as "dearest" and the wingfast union produced at least one hatchling, a male they named Braithe.
After Hortense was exposed and forced to flee the Canyonlands, the owls of Ambala were left in need of a new slipgizzle to infiltrate the evil that was St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls and continue their ploy of smuggling snatched eggs from the eggorium and hatchery with the assistances of Streak and Zan. And that slipgizzle was Bo! Understanding how necessary it was to the safety, the wellbeing and the future of not only their family, but all of her home, Braithe's Mother subsequently took on the parenting duties normally taken by the male of an owl pair and even after Bo left in the wake of Braithe's fledging, she and him continued to contact each other in secret and Braithe's Mother subsequently relayed these notes to Mist, Slynella, Zan, Stingyll and Streak for safekeeping, attempting to rid her nest of anything that could compromise her husband's mission. However, she refrained from disposing of a collection of fragments torn from one letter that she kept in remembrance. According to Bo, at least one of the eggs he stole from St. Aggie's (possibly an orphan) came into the keeping of Braithe's Mother, who apparently hoped to raise as her own with Braithe, but tragically, it never hatched.

Braithe's Mother, however, caught a case of gray scale that she eventually succumbed to several summers before the Battle of Balefire Night, leaving the scraps of Bo's messages to be found by their son, who wished several times in his quest for truth that his mother was still alive to tell him what was real and what was false.

Braithe's Mother and Bo were mates and the way that Bo writes to her in his letters all make it clear that they were close and loved each other passionately. Bo refers to his mate in his letters as dearest and presumably missed both of them agonizingly when he infiltrated St. Aegolius. This wingfast at least produced one child, Briathe, and despite having to take on full responsibility of her hatchling after Bo's mission began, Braithe's Mother never resented her mate and continued to love him.
