General Bylyric, sometimes known as The Orphan Maker, The Monster of the Ice Massif, or The Tyrant of the Talons, was a male Snowy Owl, or Bubo scandiacus, the father of Jesper and the Supreme General of the League of the Ice Talons. He is the main antagonist of The Rise of a Legend.

He chose the Symbol of Bachtyr as the insignia of the Ice Talons.

History[]

The Rise of a Legend[]

Bylyric is mentioned several times throughout the book, often by his many infamous titles: the Monster of the Ice Massif, the Tyrant of the Talons, and of course the Orphan Maker. Though not the founder of the Ice Talons, Bylyric was perhaps one of, if not the greatest, leader that League had known and under his leadership, the League came close to victory. Known for being insane, as well as sadistic and cruel, it was under Bylyric's regime that the Ice Talons adopt that crossing crescent insignia invoking the Sacred Force of Bhachtyr the Destroyer.

The Kielian League knows he has black sites for torture and is holed up in the labyrinthine Ice Talons. He also has a Kielian snake to taste test food for him. Octavia becomes a slipgizzle and manages to find out that he's in the middle Ice Talon before her escape.

Soon after, the Battle of the Ice Claws commences, and the Orphan Maker himself arrives, with a fizgig in one talon and an ice dagger in the other. Ifghar and Gragg arrive alongside him. All three of them attack Lil, with Bylyric getting the killing blow with his ice dagger. As she falls, Lyze retaliates by charging at him and attacking with his battle claws. He manages the one in a million shot of striking Bylyric in the gizzard, thus winning the battle. With the tyrant's death, his son, Jesper, inherited his remaining forces.

A Guide Book to the Great Tree[]

General Bylyric is the leader of the Ice Talons, the foremost enemy of the Kielian League when Lyze and Ifghar enrolled as cadets.

While recovering from an injury he received in combat, Ifghar asks Gragg to get him some new books to read. Among the books was A Treatise on Unification at the Foundation for Peace in the Northern Kingdoms, written by Bylyric. In it, Bylyric explained that the campaign of the Ice Talons was meant to unify the different regions of the Northern Kingdoms, and this unification would bring peace.

Ifghar, agreeing with Bylyric's philosophy, tries to explain to Ezylryb how the Keilian League can achieve peace. Ezylryb refuses to listen, taking away Ifghar's battle claws. Ifghar resolves to go and speak with Bylyric himself, looking out for his big brother.

Trivia[]

  • While it was confirmed that Bylyric died in Rise of a Legend, during which he was killed by Lyze, in The Burning, according to Gragg, Bylyric survived the Battle of the Ice Talons and cast Gragg and Ifghar out of the Ice Talons for how their betrayal of the Kielian League still hadn't stopped the League from winning. Therefore, the 'Bylyric' mentioned in The Burning might have been in actuality the Orphan Maker's son, Jesper.
  • Bylyric is the fourth main antagonist to also be a parent, the others before him being Kludd (Coryn), Nyra (Coryn) and Lord Arrin (Unnamed Son)
