A chieftain is the leader of a dire wolf clan. In the clan, they belong to the highest rank, above all others, and they would only deliberately show signs of traditional submission to other wolves when either they were petitioning for safe passage through the territories of other clans, or when they encounter the Fengo, the highest-ranking wolf of the Beyond. Fengos are the 'chieftains' of the Sacred Watch and the title itself was derived from Fengo, the chieftain of all chieftains and he who was responsible for the continued existence of the dire wolf race after he led the clans from their home in the Distant Blue to Beyond the Beyond. Clan chieftains reside in the Carreg Gaer pack of their clan, which is the lead pack, while the numerous packs that trace their origins from the Carreg Gaer pack are led by lords in the clan. According to Alaister MacDuncan, it is customer for a wolf, once they ascend to the position of chieftain of his or her clan to take the last part of their clan's name as his or her first name (e.g., the chieftain of the MacAndrew Clan would take the name Andrew MacAndrew), though there have been numerous exceptions to this rule.
