Dyvrn was a male Snowy Owl, or Bubo scandiacus, who lived more than a hundred years before the tales of the Star Cycle. Though initially favored by Glaux in legends, the death of his mate Ryt turned Dyvrn against the great spirit, who slew him in answer and wreaked a vengeful act of revenge on Dyvrn's family.
History[]
Despite being neither a widow nor an owl lacking a mate, Dyvrn joined the brotherhood of Glauxian Brothers, keeping the existence of his beloved, Ryt, a well-kept secret and deeply loved her. In addition, Dyvrn was also to become an owl blessed by Glaux itself (an occurrence that could be thought off as ironic, considering Dyvrn's place as part of an order dedicated, among other things, to the spirit of the first owls), who bestowed upon him a powerful form of good magic known as 'symagen'.
By all accords then, Dyvrn should have lived a long and happy life, with the blessing of Glaux and the loving union with his mate. Tragedy, however, struck in the form of Ryt's succumbing to a severe case of gray scale that left Dyvrn a heartbroken widower. Grief-stricken with the loss of Ryt and allowing his rage to consume him, Dyvrn besmirched the name of Glaux and even using the symagen he had been gifted with against the spiritual founder of all modern owls. In answer, Glaux instantly killed Dyvrn before, in an act of vengeance, cursed Dyvrn's brothers so that they would be possessed by Hagsfiends for the period of a century.
Legacy[]
Once these years had passed, the curse faded and the majority of the Snowies that were the descendants of Dyvrn's kin were restored to their true nature. The haggish spirits that inhabited some, however, never left until they were found by Theo and Strix Emerilla and lured with the rest of the hagsfiends across the Sea of Vastness and into the Middle Kingdoms, where, in the pampered luxury of the Panqua Palace, most of the cursed owls of the bloodline of Dyvrn, the once-blessed Glauxian Brother, because themselves again, but not all. Several hagsfiends, rather than leave their hosts, continued to lurk within, awaiting the chance to pounce.
