Elva is an Elf Owl and past member of the Ga'Hoolology Chaw. They lived a few centuries before the events of the series. Their gender is never specified.

A Guide Book to the Great Tree[]
With the guidance of their ryb Isolde and their fellow students, they helped to inspect the Great Tree when it became sickly. When the source of the sickness, the Blackfire Mushrooms, was discovered by Isolde, Elva was sent with their fellow chaw member, Sanders, to seek out the Dark Sisters in the Tyto Forest. They found them in a hollow that previously belonged to a family of Great Grays, and once their fellow members Pollianne and Hildeth were able to get information about the black fire from the tree healer, Aude, the Dark Sisters could concoct a healing potion for them from Lyssop, a rare herb.
