Faolan MacDuncan was a male dire wolf and the main protagonist of the Wolves of the Beyond series, the books following his life. The son of Morag and Kinnaird MacDuncan and brother of Mhairie and Dearlea, Faolan was born a malcadh, because of his splayed paw, which results in his toes being abnormally spread apart. He was subsequently left on the remains of a previously frozen river to drown per wolf custom, but was rescued by Thunderheart, a female grizzly who had recently lost her own cub and raised by her until the bear's own demise.
He soon joined the MacDuncan pack of the Eastern Scree to become a gnaw wolf, later becoming part of the Watch, despite an attempt by the arrogant Heep to frame him of the murder of a malcadh, but which Faolan and his friends were able to expose, resulting in Heep being driven to the Outermost. He is also the one who "jumped for the sun".
While training with his best friend Edme as a member of the Watch, Faolan and Edme exposed the plans of Edme's clan, the MacHeaths, to spark a war between wolves and grizzlies, then later they helped put an end to the wave of deadly 'Skaar dancing' caused by a wolf stylizing themself as 'the Prophet', who they discovered to be actually Liam MacDuncan. Despite this, however, combined results of the Earthquake, the Skaar Dancing and the blizzard left the dire wolf race all but decimated and Faolan subsequently led what remained of the residents of the Beyond to the wolves original homeland of the Distant Blue. Along the way, he discovered himself to be the reincarnation of the original Fengo and asked Edme to be his mate, which she accepted. Due to his crucial role in the dire wolves continued existence, Faolan became known as the 'Wolf of Wolves' and, even after his death, he is revered by all of his kind as a hero of all ages.
