Flying foxes, also known as fruit bats, are large bats belonging to the Pteropus genus. They are native to Oceania, South Asia, and East Africa. Flying foxes eat fruit and other plant matter, and occasionally consume insects as well. They locate resources with their keen sense of smell. Most, but not all, are nocturnal. They navigate with keen eyesight, as they cannot echolocate. They have long life spans and low reproductive outputs, with females of most species producing only one offspring per year.
In Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole, flying foxes make up part of the Chiropteran Alliance, with the Pure Ones outfitting them with wing blades.
Diet[]
Flying foxes consume 25–35% of their body weight daily. They are generalists that will consume a variety of items to meet their nutritional needs. Food items include fruit, flowers, nectar, and leaves. They will sometimes deliberately consume insects such as cicadas as well. In Australia, eucalypt blossoms and pollen are preferred food sources, followed by Melaleuca and Banksia flowers.
