The Former High Tyto was a leader of the Pure Ones before Kludd gained power. Very little is known about him other than the fact that he took Nyra as his mate when she was much younger than he was, although all evidence implies their union was a loveless one, at least in the eyes of Nyra, who despised him and proved more than willing to conspire against him with Kludd, who she had grown romantically attached to. The former High Tyto was surely a Barn Owl, or Tyto alba, as only they are given the highest Pure One ranking

The Siege[]
It is revealed that together, Kludd and Nyra plotted to murder the former High Tyto and anoint Kludd the next leader of the Pure Ones. Kludd succeeded in doing so, but lost his beak and half of his face in the battle, and had to wear a metal mask, earning him the title "Metal Beak".
The Hatchling[]
The former High Tyto was mentioned by Uglamore when they were hunting for Nyroc and Phillip.
The War of the Ember[]
Tavis and Cletus mention that their father - also the father of Twilight, - was killed by Kludd's predecessor.
Lost Tales of Ga'Hoole[]
The former High Tyto was present in the naming ceremony of Junior, Bartholomew, and an unnamed Barn Owl, and renamed them as Stryker, Uglamore, and Wortmore respectively. Uglamore, in response to his new name, yarped a pellet that almost hit the High Tyto in the chest.

- Even though the former High Tyto was never named in the books, it had been speculated by the fans that his name could have been Surtr, just like the corresponding character in the film.
- Though he was dead long before the young king's birth, The Former High Tyto, having once been the mate of Nyra, was technically the stepfather of her son, Nyroc/Coryn and unborn child.
