Froya is a young Polar Bear, or Ursus maritimus, and one of the main protagonists of The Den of Forever Frost and Keepers of the Keys. Born into the Sven Clan, which traced its bloodline from the cubs of Svenka herself, Froya, then known as Second, was the daughter of Taaka and the middle and only female of Taaka's litter of three. Like her brother First, Second was favoured by her mother over her younger brother, Third, and bullied him at Taaka's encouragement. Following Third's flight from the den, however, Froya became the target of her mother's cruelty and eventually discovered that she was intended to take her runaway brother's place as a Tick Tock, which First did not oppose.

Following Third's example and deserting her lifestyle and barbaric mother and brother, Second joined a group of young bears fleeing the Nunquivik for the Northern Kingdoms, which they succeeded until they were attacked by Rougers, from which Second emerged a victim of torture but alive as the only survivor, despite her best efforts to save her mortally-wounded leader. This act of true heroism was seen by the wood frogs native to the region, who took the injured Second and treated her, naming her 'Froya' after their divine goddess and regarding her with the deepest admiration. Despite the frogs' best efforts, however, Froya began to succumb to the damage inflicted by Rougers, including a disjointed arm, but was saved thanks to the aid of her brother, Third, and his companions - Froya's distant relatives - Stellan and Jytte. Despite their history, Third and the newly christened Froya subsequently reconciled, Third coming to regard Froya as his best friend, and Froya joined the three in their adventure to find Svern, bonding with her cousins in the process and displaying a skill in mental guidance, assisting in helping Jytte out of the depressed state she felt after the cub's first meeting with Svern. After a period of training with Svern, Froya ventured with her friends to the Den of Forever Frost to retrieve the Key to the Ice Clock, which they were to retrieve despite the dangers, Froya in the process killing a spectral hagsfiend when it attacked them.

The retrieval of the Key was, for Froya and her friends, followed by a travel to the island of Ga'Hoole, where they not only requested the aid of Soren and the Guardians in the fight against the Timekeepers of the Ice Caps and their plans for mass annihilation, but also trained under Otulissa, where Froya proved herself to be a skilled geographer with the gift of mapping by the stars, an ability known as 'Starwalking', which, when combined with Third's tracker skills, formed a great navigation team. The four bears subsequently took on the vast task of gathering allies throughout the lands of the Southern Kingdoms, successfully enlisting the aid of the Greenowls of Ambala, the Frost Beaks stationed in Silverveil and (despite their failings with the MacDuncan Clan) the clans of MacNamara and MacNab, discovering with Rags in the process that a triumvirate alliance had been formed with Duncan MacDuncan II, the Grand Patek of the Ice Caps and the MacHeath Clan against the Guardians and their allies. Following their recruitment of the MacNamaras, Froya returned to Ga'Hoole with her brother and friends, where she now currently resides with Third, Jytte, Stellan and her distant aunt Svenna.
