Fyngrot is a skill unique to hagsfiends. It is a pale yellow light that seeps from their eyes that can make an owl go yeep. The only known owls that can effectively stop fyngrot are Queen Siv and Hoole.
The fyngrot can be shattered by aiming the eyes of dire wolves at the fyngrot, as shown in multiple parts in To Be a King. Also in the last part of the book, at the Battle of Short Night and Long Night, Hoole decides to wait until dark to attack so they can stop the fyngrot with the green eyes of the dire wolves.
