"Some creatures say faith is believing what you cannot see or prove. But I believe that faith is the power to imagine."

- Gilda to Lyze, The Rise of a Legend, page 30

Gilda was a female Kielian Snake, and was the nest maid snake of Lyze of Kiel's family hollow on Stormfast Island. She was thought of by Lyze as being "the bravest snake I ever knew". Her scales are described as "striated violusian" in color, a deep purple.[1]

History[]

The Rise of a Legend[]

Gilda served as the nest maid for Lyze's hollow while their usual nest maid, Mrs. Grinkle, was out visiting relatives. Lyze's mother Ulfa complained that Gilda was "not as good as Mrs. Grinkle"[2], although Lyze found her quite interesting. Lyze noticed that she was far more imaginative than any snake he had met before, as she envied how well his parents flew and wished she could fly herself. When fledgling Lyze was nervous about making the short flight over to Moss' tree, Gilda counseled him, telling him to imagine the feel of the pummels on his wings even thought they hadn't come through yet.

Later, when Lyze and Moss return from Thora's forge, she is initially mad at them for being gone so long without word, but upon finding out that they made a promise to keep it secret, she decides to cover for them, as she finds trust to be very important.

When Stormfast is attacked and Lyze's hollow goes up in flames, Gilda rescues Lyze after he passes out trying to save Lysa. After Lyze leaves to become a cadet for the Kielian League on Dark Fowl Island, Gilda serves as the nest maid of Rask and Ulfa for a little longer, before being let go because Ulfa found her nest maid work unsatisfactory.

Later, Gilda is recruited to the Glauxspeed Division, where she was partnered with a Snowy named Jonor. Jonor, however, was killed by a fizgig delivered to the skull during a skirmish off one of the Firths, though Gilda survived thanks to her ability to swim. She was subsequently relocated to a refugee camp on the H'rathghar Glacier while she waited for her next assignment. While there, she helped make nest for the countless orphans and, during this, to her delight, she encountered Lyze.

Personality[]

"Trust is all we have in a civilized world. If we cannot trust each other, we have nothing."
―Gilda, The Rise of a Legend, pages 82-83

Gilda is said to be a brave and trustworthy snake, and she is very kind and motherly towards Lyze. She is shown to envy the owls' abilities to fly, and when Lyze and Moss go to Thora's forge, she also envies the fact that they had something so interesting in their lives, and longs for adventure herself. Gilda believes very strongly in trust and keeping secrets, and won't further question anyone who has a secret.
