H'rath

H'rath was a Spotted Owl, or Strix occidentalis, who was High King of the Northern Kingdoms and the mate of Siv, his queen during the time of the Legends of Ga'Hoole. He was killed in battle, forcing Siv to flee with their egg. This was the egg of Hoole, the first monarch of the Great Ga'Hoole Tree.

Before the Books[]

H'rath, Siv, and Grank were all close friends when they were young. His father was King H'rathmore, the king at that time, making H'rath the crown prince. When a Great Gray Owl landed and offered him a bite of a lemming, Grank had a firesight vision of a flying snake hidden in the prey, and saved H'rath. He and Siv then made a blood oath that they would never speak of Grank's powers. After his father's death H'rath became High King and took Siv as his mate, then sometime before The First Collier, they had a egg.

The First Collier[]

H'rath had sent a message to Grank, his good friend who was currently residing in the Beyond the Beyond with a wolf named Fengo. The message was a plea for help asking Grank to come back to the Northern Kingdoms, which were known back then as N'yrthghar. It also asked him to protect Siv, the egg, and the hatchling of the egg once it hatched if anything happened to him.

Unfortunately, Grank was in possession of the Ember of Hoole at that time and didn't respond immediately until Fengo convinced him to drop it back in the volcano. The moment Grank did this, he came back to his senses and knew that he must go to the aid of his old friends. But, by then, it was too late. He found out that H'rath had been killed and that Siv was on the fly with the egg.
