Mac was a Brown Fish Owl, or Ketupa Zeylonensis, and gadfeather during the late Hag Wars.

The Coming of Hoole[]
During an annual gathering of gadfeathers, Mac was one of a small collection of Fish Owls that, after returning from a fishing expedition, gathered around the catch, discussing with another of the troubadour musicians the recent news of the movements of Lord Arrin, who's forces Mac's friends revealed had withdrawn into a more contained position on the ice of the Hrath'ghar Glacier, an action provoked by the continued resistance of the guards of H'rath, who's rebellion Mac revealed to be a minor but ongoing struggle against the Snowy Lord. When another of the feasting gadfeathers expressed excitement over how such a removal of military warfare would leave the Firth of Fangs free of fighting in time for sporting flight on the summer smee holes, Mac pointed out that such peace would likely result in the presence of kraals. As the singers' conversation turned to the pirate owls — who's flocks had been rumoured to have been joined by an elderly Screech Owl who had once flown in Mac's troop — Mac agreed that the buccaneer kraals were of a nasty lot, but laboured under the misconception that the Glauxian Brothers had settled down of the Hrath'ghar, which another gadfeather corrected Mac on. Mac and his friend soon began returning their discussions to that of the ongoing war, gossiping over the rumoured presence of Ygryk only leagues from where they now perched. This story soon provoked a discussion of how the Bitter Sea continued to remain free of Lord Arrin's influence due to his increasingly haggish traits, with Mac and his partner talking about how salt water was death to hagsfiends.
