Matron is an old term used to refer to a nurse or caretaker, usually a female. In the Guardians of Ga'Hoole series, matrons oversee the care of wounded and sick owls, new arrivals to the tree, rescued owlets and other domestic tasks. Many work in the infirmary alongside nest maid snakes.

One of the more notable matrons of the Great Tree is a Short-eared Owl who primarily appears in The Journey and The Rescue. This has led to some confusion, with some readers concluding that this owl is named Matron. Uses of the word in other contexts prove otherwise. E.g. "it made me too nervous to have all these matrons and owls checking on me all the time." (Madame Plonk, The Golden Tree, page 116)
