Matty is a young Snowy Owl, or Bubo scandiacus, and a chawlet tapped from the Navigation Chaw, a class which they share with Bell, Basha and Blythe. Their favourite colour is orange.

The River of Wind[]
Matty was among the class of chawlets taken by Eglantine and Pellimore to a recently-fire struck piece of Silverveil, where, up landing, the cluster of young owlets fell into restlessness until they were called to attention by Eglantine. Answering in the positive when the Barn Owl inquired if they, along with the rest of their grade, were aware of the Chaw of Chaws, Matty either refrained or was not given the chance to brag of the accomplishments of their relations before Pellimore returned the class's attention to the original purpose of it's flight to Silverveil, but when Soren's mate displayed a glowing ember to the chawlet, Matty piped up to state how orange was their favourite colour, risking another boasting match from the other owls before they were silenced swiftly by Pellimore into a navigation practice exercise, which Bell, Heggety and Max were similarly tapped under the watch of Fritha. Practicing the basics of navigating via the stars of the Golden Talons, Matty was swiftly stationed at the port side of the group, nearly colliding with Max in the process, though they, unlike the ill-tempered Max, made no noise of antagonism towards the Pygmy Owl as Fritha pointed out their correct position with exaggerated curtesy. When Fritha, however, hinted at the possibility of quizzing the four during flight, Matty, exhibiting a groan, expressed their distain for fill-in rybs.
Mid-flight, however, the five were diminished to four when Bell, bored with the class, peeled of in search of better winds to fly and dance in, and disappears as a result. Returning to the meeting place, flying to starboard with Heggety, Matty gave no addition to Fritha's report and returned with the rest of the trainees to the Great Tree.
