Jouzhenkyn, known by Hoolian owls as the Middle Kingdoms or Sixth Kingdom, is an owl kingdom that, until recently, remained inconspicuous for at least a thousand years. The owls that reside here have plumage that is various shades of blue and speak the language of Jouzhen. Unlike the Hoolian Kingdoms, there are no crows here, so day flying is safe.

In order to reach the Middle Kingdom from the Hoolian Kingdoms, one must travel west from the Beyond and cross the Sea of Vastness. The final obstacle is the River of Wind, known as the Zong Phong to the blue owls, a deadly maelstrom of swirling winds. To survive and overcome this obstacle, one must have a "key" to the complex wind patterns. One must also be able to maneuver in accordance with said key by reacting swiftly and appropriately to the shifting air currents while progressing through the River.

History[]

Before the Books[]

Theo, the first blacksmith, followed Ivar to the Middle Kingdoms. He lured the remaining hagsfiends in the Hoolian kingdoms to the Middle Kingdom, where he trapped their minds with vanity and illusions of power. Theo would be known as the first H'ryth. The owls of the Middle Kingdoms had lived in what Tengshu had described as a time of "shallow thought", until the arrival of Theo. Theo stayed in the kingdom, teaching the blue owls "the way of noble gentleness" and writing the Theo Papers.

The River of Wind[]

The Middle Kingdoms play a central role in the story, as this is where the Chaw of Chaws travel. They discover that the Middle Kingdoms are populated by a race of owls that resembled those from Hoolian kingdoms, except that they were blue and called dragon owls, one of them being the Striga.

Exile[]

The Striga, main antagonist of the story who bans the Band from the Tree in an effort to take control of Coryn's mind and the Tree, comes from the Middle Kingdoms.

Eventually, Tengshu from the Middle Kingdoms comes to help the Band in the end.

The War of the Ember[]

The Dragon Owls come from the Middle Kingdoms to fight in the war with the Pure Ones and the Striga.

Also, Coryn wished to hide the Ember in the Middle Kingdoms. However, this never happened as they were unable to get permission from Theosang.

Description[]

The land is filled with jagged, snow-covered mountains, pink-and-grey-swirled stone cliffs, and snowy, oddly shaped pine trees. The region mainly consists of mountains and pine trees, and the entire landscape has a layer of snow upon it.
