Penfold is a Northern Saw-whet Owl, or Aegolius acadicus, who was a member of the Guardians of the Guardians of the Ember. Their gender is unknown, and their fate is unknown, but it's likely that they were sent to either the Glauxian Brothers' Retreat or Glauxian Sister's Retreat.

Penfold is one of the six members of the GGE, along with Gemma, Elyan, Yeena, Humbert and Felix. They are only mentioned when Coryn and the Band scolds the six owls for their actions. It is said that they were toppled by the wash of Coryn's wings flapping.
