"At last, someone understands what a jewel my Ygryk truly is!"
―Pleek's thoughts when Lord Arrin compliments his mate, The Coming of Hoole, page 47

Pleek was a Great Horned Owl, or Bubo virginianus, owl lord who was most famous for taking Ygryk, a hagsfiend, as a mate during the time of the legends of Ga'Hoole. He was rejected by his family and friends when they learned of his choice of mate.

History[]

The First Collier[]

Lord Pleek, with his mate Ygryk, were part of the Lord Arrin’s army and followed him in his incursions. Indeed, the army that amassed on the Firth of Fangs in Arrin's name was appointed under the command of the fiercest of Pleek's lieutenants, while Pleek himself flew with Ygryk and Lord Arrin's knights.

Pleek accompanied Arrin when he flew to the iceberg where Siv had been discovered hiding by Ygryk, who was implied to have been present as well. Due to their union, it was most unlikely that Pleek and Ygryk could ever bare a child of their own, so Ygryk became fixated on taking Siv's egg for her own.

The Coming of Hoole[]

Desiring to have a chick, Pleek and Ygryk made a deal with Lord Arrin: they would trace both Queen Siv, who already escaped from the firth, and the egg she had, then they would have kept the egg, and Ygryk would have been the mother of it. However, they didn’t know that Lord Arrin planned to have them killed by Ullryck just after they reached their target.

When Pleek and his mate reached the island in the middle of the Bitter Sea, they attempted to kidnap Hoole and his mother. During the fight, Pleek tried to defend Ygryk, intent on casting a spell on Hoole, but unsuccessfully. They were defeated and, wounded, were forced to flee.

He and Ygryk were later attacked by Ullryck and her two Great Gray Owl bodyguards, but were saved by and found refuge with the nearby flying Kreeth, an old friend of Ygryk's who lived in the Ice Narrows, who was working on the creation of strange crosses between birds as well as on a spell that would have made hagsfiends immune to the seawater.

To Be a King[]

Pleek and his mate finally got a chick to care for, hatched from an egg of a Great Horned Owl stolen by Kreeth. At first the hatchling, called Lutta, seemed to be a normal owl, but then they understood that, in truth, she had peculiar characteristics and continually changed her species due to the spell that Kreeth cast on her in the early stage of development inside the egg. Pleek and his mate were happy with their daughter for a while, but then they found it difficult to accept Lutta, so they abandoned her to Kreeth.

Later, during the battle of the Short Light and the Long Night, he realized due to Ygryk that Lutta was not a monster, but that they were the freaks, because they didn’t know how to love their daughter, who they had desired so much.

The Den of Forever Frost[]

A crevasse leading out of the underground glacial tunnels of the Northern Kingdoms was named Pleek's Plonk, most likely after Pleek from the legends. "Plonk" is in reference to the sound a creature makes if they fall from the walls while attempting to climb, and they "plonk" on the ground.

Trivia[]

  • Pleek and Ygryk are the only cross-species couple in the book series (although they are not the only hagsfiend-owl union in history, according to Ygryk). Likewise, Nyra and Metal Beak (a Barn Owl and a Greater Sooty Owl, respectively, though both are Tytos) form the only cross-species pair in the movie.
