Sianna was a young female Barn Owl, or Tyto alba, and was the Great Tree's Ga'Hoolologist around the time of the Age of Enlightenment.

She noticed one spring night that the Great Tree had a new guest, a caterpillar that glowed with all the colors of the rainbow. Sianna, along with many other residents of the Great Tree, was mesmerized by the luminaspheres the caterpillars spun.
Heilo the Blind, practically immune to beautiful lights of the caterpillars due to his blindness, sensed the tree was ill from the caterpillars devouring the leaves and new shoots (stunting its growth) for months on end; despite Sianna's protests, he informed the parliament that they should destroy the luminaspheres and remove the caterpillars themselves from the Isle of Hoole.
