"Yes, my lord"
―Sinfagel's terror of her mate, Dunleavy, The Coming of Hoole

Sinfagel was a female Aenocyon dirus, or Dire Wolf, who, during the time of Hoole, was a member of the MacHeaths and a mate of the clan's chieftain, Dunleavy. She, like all of MacHeath's mates, was deformed not from birth, but rather as a result of an injury delivered by her own mate.

History[]

Early Life[]

Travelling from her birthplace[]

Like all of the dire wolves that roamed Beyond the Beyond in the time of the legends, Sinfagel was once a wolf of the Distant Blue, but was driven from her homeland by the Long Cold and was led by Fengo to the lands across the sea and ice: the land known as Beyond the Beyond, where the clans settled again.

Like all of her family, Sinfagel was a victim of continuous abuse from her mate, who himself was constantly possessed by a wild and unpredictable fury. In one of these fits, Sinfagel was left scarred when the furious chieftain ripped out an eye, although Sinfagel was able to survive. According to Dunleavy, he named all his partners, rendering Sinfagel's name being her's by birth dubious.

The Coming of Hoole[]

As with all of Dunleavy's mate, Sinfagel was among the wolves that beheld the MacHeath chieftain, driven into a fury by his refusal to permit him to serve, attacked Fengo, only to be half-blinded. Despite the abuse she had suffered at his paws, Sinfagel, through the knot of new promises and old favours, continued to follow Dunleavy in spite of Fengo's declaration that MacHeath's she-wolves were free.

Retreating with her mate and the other wolves of her clan to their cave, Sinfagel henceforth assisted in licking her husband's now empty eye socket clean of blood, but instantly fell back in submission as Dunleavy clambered to his feet as he contemplated to absence of Hordweard - his longest mate - and began pacing the cavern in a show of rising fury. As his insane answer built, he growled at each of his mates, who answered by groveling at his feet. When he arrived at Sinfagel, he roughly pulled her face upwards, screaming for her to look him in the eye, then erupting into cackling laughter, noting the similar marking he and Sinfagel now shared, which the terrified she-wolf agreed with.

When Hordweard met Dunleavy and returned the gnaw bone offered to her in exchange for her services, Sinfagel erupted into wailing howls with the other mates of MacHeath in answer to the gnaw bone snapping, a source of immense superstition for dire wolves. Later on, she was also among the wolves that gathered at the Sacred Ring when Hordweard, now known as Namara, returned to the Beyond, carrying the lifeless body of Sinfagel's mate and tormentor, Dunleavy MacHeath, in her jaws. Though certainly silently elated that the tyrant that had left her without a full tongue would never torture her or her pups again, Sinfagel showed signs of nervousness as well, clearly afraid of MacHeath's crimes being pinned on her as well. Sinfagel presumably participated in the subsequent battle against the hagsfiend and owl followers of Lord Arrin and, assuming she survived, beheld Hoole retrieve the Ember from Dunmore. It is uncertain what became of Sinfagel, but she might have remained with the MacHeaths or left the Clan to form the MacNamara Clan.

Trivia[]

  • Sinfagel shares some similarities to Edme in that she is a MacHeath wolf who had one eye torn out by the clan's chieftain.
