Smutty is a Lesser Sooty Owl, or Tyto multipunctata. He was a Pure One but was imprisoned by them when he showed fear during the Battle of the Burning.

Smutty is a prisoner of the Pure Ones, the very organization he fought for during the Battle of the Burning, for supposed cowardice and speaking of the hated Great Tree in anything less than a tone that was utterly scathing. Being a Lesser Sooty Owl, he is the lowest ranked Pure One, given an offensive name in replacement of his actual one. When Nyroc has his special ceremony, he is shocked when he learns that he has to kill Phillip, his best friend. He refuses, telling Nyra that he thought it would be a fox, or even Smutty. Nyra says that it would have been too easy, as he hardly even knew Smutty.
