Speo is a minor character in Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. They appear to be a ryb at the Great Tree, making small background appearances and only ever being named in The Art of Legend of the Guardians. In the scene where Allomere brings the moon blinked owlets to the Great Tree, they can been seen telling another owl to "Fetch it, quickly" in a deeper voice. This could indicate that the character may have been intended to be male, but this remains unconfirmed.
Speo's character model looks incredibly similar to the model of the character that most fans assumed was intended to portray Dewlap. However, no direct evidence can be found to support that Dewlap was in Legend of the Guardians, meaning Speo may be a character created to replace her (as similarly happened with Allomere replacing Elvan).
Etymology[]
While Burrowing Owls are usually regarded as belonging to the genus Athene, in the past, they were assigned the genus Speotyto, which is where Speo likely got their name.
History[]
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole[]
Speo was seen briefly on the perch with Allomere, Barran, Boron, Bubo, Ezylryb, Strix Struma and the rest of the parliament after The Band arrived at the Great Tree.
They later appeared for several seconds when Digger dug up a crab, which subsequently pinched him. They were seen looking un-amused while Soren, Gylfie, Twilight and Otulissa laugh.
Later, after Allomere returns with Eglantine and another downed owlet, Speo briefly asks a Saw-whet to go fetch help.
When the Band are made Guardians in the end, they can be seen cheering and bowing.
Trivia[]
- In the books, the chaw is called "Ga'Hoolology". For the movie, they changed it to "Ga'Hoology", most likely to make it easier to say.
