Strix Hurthwel was a male Spotted Owl, or Strix occidentalis, who was the mate of Strix Strumajen and father of Strix Emerilla and Strix Miralda during the time of The Legends of Ga'Hoole.

To Be a King[]
During a skirmish at the Ice Fangs, Strix Hurthwel was killed by a hagsfiend named Mycroft who decapitated him and took his head as a trophy. His head later became a source of conflict between Mycroft and Kreeth, the arch hagsfiend of the ancient world. Kreeth wanted Hurthwel's head for her changing, Lutta, so that she could infiltrate the Great Ga'Hoole Tree and steal the Ember of Hoole under the disguise of Emerilla, Hurthwel's daughter (who went missing during the conflict at which he was killed). When Kreeth glimpsed Mycroft's dwelling place through her divining eyeball, she commented that Hurthwel's head was a very handsome head (as she thought all Spotted Owls were) and that his eyes still had good luster. After stealing a feather from Hurthwel's head, she used it to transform Lutta into Emerilla.
