Theo's Uncle was a Great Horned Owl, or Bubo virginianus. He was the uncle of Theo, Pye and Shadyk, though through which side of their family is unclarified. Unlike their father, Hakon, Theo's Uncle was portrayed as a kind and gentle owl who his oldest nephew took much after.

History[]

The First Collier[]

Theo mentions his uncle when he first meets Grank, telling him how his uncle had fought in the Siege of the Fangs, where he lost his life to (and, in Theo's words, "murdered" by) Lord Arrin's hagsfiends. Though the circumstances of his death are unknown, if he was indeed murdered by crowls, he was likely beheaded in keeping with the gruesome traditions of their killings (if so, his head might have been kept as a trophy by his killed). Before his death, Theo's uncle was apparently close to his oldest nephew at least and was described as a good teacher. According to Theo, his uncle held to the belief that knowledge of the natural order of things, rather than the unnatural order, was the key to the hagsfiends defeat. In Theo's eyes, one of his uncle's wises words were "I teach because I was taught".

Grank later notes that, with the exception of this uncle, Theo never mentioned any of his family, never speaking of a mother or father, brother or sister.
