Wensel was a Barn Owl, a gifted artist at the Great Ga'Hoole Tree. He was well known for his extraordinary illustrations in books in the Great Tree's library.

The Hatchling[]
Wensel appears when Otulissa gives her students a lesson about the Ember of Hoole. When Buck and Fritha begin to argue whether or not the dire wolves are extinct, Otulissa says that they are only assumed to be extinct. This promts Wensel to ask if the legends are true then, to which Otulissa replies that they have the potential to be true.
The War of the Ember[]
After Bess fought a mysterious Boreal Owl and discovered that he knew she was hiding the Ember of Hoole, she told Coryn and the rest of the Council at the Great Tree. They decided on a plan to remove the Ember from the Palace of Mists and take it to the Middle Kingdoms. Wensel, along with Ruby and Fritha, was selected to carry one of three botkins in HALO; one of the botkins had the real Ember in it and the other two had fakes inside.
Wensel was selected for the mission because of his artistic turn of mind. However, it was this turn of mind that also distracted him while flying with his burden; he began to daydream if the Ember was really in his botkin. This distraction allowed Tarn and two other Burrowing Owls to ambush him. If it wasn't for Soren and Gylfie following him at a higher altitude and the intervention of Tavis and Cletus, the Great Gray brothers, he would have probably ended up dead.
Personality[]
Wensel was a talented and creative artist and loyal Guardian. He was described as having great intellect and a quirky, eccentric personality.
