Wynnifryd is a female Great Gray Owl, or Strix nebulosa, and the mother of Loki.
History[]
Before the Books[]
Wynnifryd was injured (a bent wing), and her mate killed, in the Battle of Firthgot. For a time after, she served as a quartermaster.
The Rise of a Legend[]
Upon arriving in the Shagdah Snurl, or the Shag as natives called it, Loki, Blix, and Lyze visit Wynnifryd. She puts some naked rockmunk on coals and introduces Lyze to cooked meat. She is also interested in his ideas for midair reloads. She questions if they saw a peregrine, wondering why it would be in such an unpopulated area. She goes on to say that she doesn't go out much, and most of her friends have died. She does enjoy that the area is quite solitary.
Later on, she turns up at a Kielian League camp to take care of owlets and introduce them to cooked meat, in this case voles. She also teaches them songs, and they call her Wynnie. While she takes Lyze and Loki on a tour of the camp, she explains that while she flies cattywumpus, she managed to get here to "do her bit". She goes on to say that she cooks the meat because the owlets are too weak to eat, and cooking the meat helps it go down easier.
